Behind-The-Wheel
What safety equipment are your cars equipped with?
Our vehicles have safety features (passenger brake, passenger rearview mirror, student driver signs) that don't come in standard cars. Our vehicles also have cameras inside the vehicle that records the interior, rear and the front of the vehicle.
Driver Education
Do I need a temporary permit to start drivers ed?
No, you do not need a permit to start the 24 hour course(either in-person or online). However you will need a valid permit before we can schedule you for the behind-the-wheel drives.
What are the current Ohio driver's education requirements for teen and young adults?
All first-time drivers under 21 in Ohio must complete a full Class D driver's education course. This includes 24 hours of classroom or online instruction and 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training. Additionally, students must log 50 hours of supervised driving practice (including 10 hours at night) before taking the road test.
At Dayton Driving School, our programs fully comply with these updated Ohio BMV requirements to help you get your license safely and efficiently.
Does Dayton Driving School provide the vehicle for the behind-the-wheel instruction?
Yes, we provide the vehicle for your 8-hour instruction session (and all our lessons)!
All instruction takes place in our modern, fully equipped dual-controlled vehicles, so you don't need to bring your own car. These are designed specifically for driver training, ensuring a safe and comfortable learning experience.
Your instructor will have:
- An independent brake pedal on the passenger side for immediate intervention if needed
- An additional rearview mirror for better supervision
This setup prioritizes safety while helping you build skills and confidence behind the wheel.
What is the minimum requirement to start the 8 hour behind-the-wheel?
You need to have a valid permit to start the 8 hour behind-the-wheel instruction. You can obtain a permit at the age of 15 years and 5 months.
What is the minimum age requirement to the 24 hour online or in-person course?
You can start the 24-hour online or in-person course at the age of 15 and 5 months. You are not required to have a permit to start the online or in-person course, although we do recommend it. We cannot schedule you for the 8-hour behind-the-wheel until you have a permit.
